Isolation of herpes simplex virus from the cornea in chronic stromal keratitis.

چکیده
Although dendritic ulceration of the corneal epithelium due to herpes simplex virus (HSV) frequently resolves with minimal residual damage,' virus may penetrate the corneal stroma and initiate a chronic, recurrent inflammation with an associated fall in visual acuity. The signs of disease in such patients result from the immune response to the presence in the cornea of viral antigen,2 which may be expressed by complete or incomplete virus particles, or an antigen on the surface of infected cells and their nuclei.3 Despite the demonstration of viral antigen by immunofluorescence,4s and of virus particles by electron microscopy,'9 it has proved difficult to culture virus in chronic stromal keratitis. We report here the isolation of HSV from 2 such patients, one with chronic ulcerative keratitis and one with recurrent disciform keratitis.

Herpetic keratitis which is resulted from herpes simplex virus type I, is considered the most common cause of corneal blindness that needs being diagnosed and treated in order to prevent irreversible eye effects. The best method to diagnose it is molecular method which has high sensitivity and exclusivity. The current study was done on 25 eye samples collected from patients referred to the Feyz...

متن کامل476 Viral Dna and Herpes Simplex Virus Ocular
Ocular disease caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 ranges in severity from a self-limiting blepharitis, conjunctivitis, or dendritic keratitis to a disciform stromal edema and necrotizing stromal keratitis that can cause blindness. Herpes keratitis and stromal disease are distinct, readily differentiable clinical entities that can be studied in animal models. In pure dendritic herpes keratit...
متن کاملPassive transfer of anti-herpes simplex virus type 2 monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies protect against herpes simplex virus type 1-induced but not herpes simplex virus type 2-induced stromal keratitis.
PURPOSE To investigate whether passive transfer of antibodies to viral glycoproteins would protect against herpes simplex virus type 2-induced stromal keratitis. METHODS Balb/c mice were infected on the scarified cornea with herpes simplex virus types 1 or 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2, respectively), and monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies were administered intraperitoneally 24 hr later. Eyes were moni...
متن کاملHerpes simplex virus stromal keratitis is not titer-dependent and does not correlate with neurovirulence.
We developed a murine model of ocular herpes simplex virus (HSV) disease which is particularly suited for testing stromal keratitis because most animals show some evidence of infection. Using this model, we characterized the ocular disease patterns caused by ten recent low-passage clinical isolates of HSV-1, as well as those caused by the established laboratory strains HSV-1 KOS and HSV-2 333. ...
